Packaging Materials, Double-Boxing, and Carrier Requirements

Choose suitable packaging materials, use double-boxing when appropriate, and follow the carrier’s current requirements before shipping Marketplace orders.

The right materials and packing method help protect music gear during transit. Sellers are responsible for packaging each order appropriately and following the chosen carrier’s current requirements.

Choose Materials That Match the Item

  • Sturdy corrugated boxes: Use boxes that are clean, rigid, undamaged, and appropriate for the package’s final weight.
  • Cushioning: Use suitable bubble wrap, foam, corrugated inserts, or other protective materials around fragile surfaces, corners, and edges.
  • Void fill: Fill all empty space so the item cannot move inside the box.
  • Shipping tape: Use tape designed for shipping, not masking tape, cellophane tape, string, or paper wrap.

When to Double-Box

Double-boxing can provide added protection for fragile, heavy, valuable, or irregularly shaped gear. Pack the item securely in an inner box, then place that box inside a larger, strong outer carton with cushioning between the two boxes. The inner box should not touch the outer carton or move inside it.

Seal the Box Correctly

Use shipping tape across the center seam and both edge seams, often called the H-tape method. Seal the top and bottom of the package. Do not place the shipping label over a seam.

Carrier Requirements Come First

Carrier packaging rules, prohibited-item policies, size limits, weight limits, and claim terms can differ by service and may change. Review the current rules before purchasing a label or handing over the shipment.

Declared value, insurance, or other carrier coverage is governed by the carrier’s terms. It does not cure inadequate packaging, and a carrier may deny a damage claim when its packaging requirements were not met.
