How to Pack Guitars and Basses for Shipping

Protect guitars and basses from movement, impact, and damage by preparing the instrument, case, and shipping carton correctly.

Guitars and basses are vulnerable to impact, especially around the neck, headstock, and body edges. Every seller is responsible for packaging the instrument safely before handing it to a carrier.

Prepare the Instrument

Photograph the instrument’s condition before packing it. Remove or secure loose accessories, tools, straps, and cables. Protect any areas that could rub, shift, or make contact during transit.

Prepare the Case

A gig bag or hard case is not an exterior shipping carton. Use a properly fitted case when available, then make sure the instrument cannot move inside it. Support the neck and headstock with suitable cushioning, and fill open spaces around the body without placing pressure on delicate parts.

Use a Proper Shipping Carton

Place the case inside a sturdy guitar or bass shipping box with cushioning between the case and every side of the outer carton. Do not ship an instrument in only a gig bag or case. The box should be strong enough for the finished package weight and sized to prevent shifting.

Seal and Document the Shipment

Seal every center and edge seam with shipping tape. Remove old labels, apply the new label to a flat surface, and keep photographs of the packed instrument, closed carton, shipping label, and carrier drop-off receipt.

Review Carrier Requirements

Packaging and coverage decisions are governed by the carrier’s current terms. Review its guidance before shipping:

  • UPS packaging tips
  • FedEx guidance for packing breakables
  • USPS package preparation guide
  • DHL Express packing instructions
