How to Pack Amplifiers, Speakers, and Heavy Gear

Learn how to protect amplifiers, speakers, cabinets, and other heavy music gear with suitable boxes, cushioning, and carrier preparation.

Amplifiers, speakers, cabinets, and other heavy music gear need packaging that can support the item’s full weight and protect exposed parts. A weak or poorly sized box can fail before the shipment reaches the buyer.

Protect Vulnerable Parts

Photograph the item before packing. Protect knobs, switches, corners, speaker grilles, handles, feet, and exposed hardware. Secure removable accessories and cables separately so they cannot shift or damage the equipment.

If an item has removable components, only remove and pack them separately when you know how to do so safely and it is appropriate for that item.

Choose a Box Rated for the Weight

Use a strong corrugated box that is suitable for the completed package weight. Heavy gear may require double-wall packaging, double-boxing, reinforced corners, or other protection appropriate to the item. Avoid reused, weakened, or water-damaged boxes.

Keep the Gear Centered

Use dense cushioning around every side of the item and fill all empty space so the gear cannot shift. Do not rely on loose, lightweight packing material alone for heavy equipment. The item should remain centered and stable when the sealed box is gently moved.

Confirm Carrier Limits Before Shipping

Measure and weigh the finished package before buying a label. Check the carrier’s current size, weight, special-handling, and surcharge requirements. Some large or heavy shipments may need a service other than standard parcel shipping.

Seal, Label, and Keep Records

Seal all seams with shipping tape. Place the label on a flat surface, away from seams, and keep photos of the item, packed box, and carrier drop-off receipt until the transaction is complete.

Carrier coverage is subject to the carrier’s terms and does not replace proper packaging.
